Why did you move to Whistler?

I’d always wanted to do a season in Whistler and moved from Glasgow in 2008. I was looking for a new challenge in real estate and after completing my season I decided to make the move permanent.

How did you first get into real estate?

My first job in real estate was when I was 16, my aunt was a property lawyer in the UK and I used to work for her in the summer. Going into university I began working for a real estate company part time and from there I decided to become a realtor.

What do you enjoy about the lifestyle here?

The lifestyle here is incredibly flexible, especially being in real estate, you have the ability to experience the very best of Whistler while still working a full day. You can get up early, enjoy a day on the mountain and then go to work.

Every day is different and no matter what you do it doesn’t feel like you’re just behind a desk, it feels like you’re out in nature.

What is your favourite season and why?

I think spring has got to be my favourite season. You’re able to do just about everything, you can play golf, take your bike out, go skiing, you can literally do any activity you want.

What’s the most recent hobby you’ve picked up?

I’ve actually just got a new motorbike and I’ve been using that to explore trails up on the mountains. Some of the access trails we use for snowmobiling in the winter, I’ve been able to explore those on my bike and that’s been a lot of fun!

What advice would you give to someone looking to buy property here?

I think the best advice would be figure out what you want to use the property for. That will be the determining factor when deciding what to get. How many people is it for? Is it a permanent residence? How often will you use it?

The biggest thing people tend to overlook is having an idea of what they want, but not necessarily what they need. Working this out will definitely help the process.

What is your most important tip for sellers?

I think one of the most important things is to depersonalise your space. It can be difficult as in many cases you are living in the property, but definitely de-clutter and aim to present it in the best light.

What is your favourite thing about working with your clients?

I think the diversity of the people we get to meet is my favourite thing. We work with people form all over the world and all walks of life, and it’s really interesting to meet new people and hear their stories.

What is your most memorable sale?

I think that would have to be selling 120 acres of land just north of Emerald. This is one of the biggest pieces of land sold, and the client was extremely interesting.

The project he is working on now is probably going to be one of the most interesting Whistler properties to be built.

What makes you smile the most?

I think it’s the little moments you get to yourself here, outside of the busy periods when no one else is around.

Whether it’s your little spot on the mountain, or out on the trails on your bike. When no one else is around, those moments where it feels like you have Whistler to yourself, it’s so special.

What accomplishment do you consider to be the most significant in your career or life?

For me the process of moving here was the most significant. Transitioning from the UK to Whistler was incredibly difficult with lots of challenges and obstacles. That process was one of the most challenging and to have made it work and now be living here is one of the most rewarding things.

Finally, in one sentence, why should people come to live here?

It truly is a unique place, there is nowhere else like it, and you will probably not have a better experience anywhere else in the world.
